Written on 18/11/2020 by Darren Thrussell
A tactically brilliant ride by jockey ALEXANDER PIETSCH led to the Sascha Smrczek-trained DATO landing the final Pattern race of the German racing season, the Listed Wettstar Grosser Dresdner Herbstpreis at Dresden on Wednesday.
Just behind the leaders turning into the back straight in the 2200 metre contest, Dato was taken to the far outside of the course with jockey Pietsch looking for better ground, and although none of his nine opponents took the same route, the decision proved to be an inspired one from Pietsch, with Dato leaving the back straight with around an eight length lead.
Despite 3.7-1 favourite Enjoy the Moon trying his best to close in the home straight under jockey Martin Seidl, Dato was never seriously threatened after establishing his clear lead, eventually crossing the line 3¾ lengths ahead of Enjoy the Moon, with 43.6-1 outsider Perfect Pitch running a big race to finish third.
Bred in England by Newsells Park Stud, Dato, by dual Group 1 winner Mount Nelson out of French Listed winner Dear Lavinia, is a half brother to Ousden House, winner of eight races over sprint distances in Sweden and Norway, and Double Spin, who despite being winless in eight runs for trainer Robert Cowell, did finish runner up to future Group 1 winner Mabs Cross in a maiden race at Newcastle in 2017.

KREFELD: MAIDEN MYTHICO TAKES GROUP 3 CONTEST
Written on 16/11/2020 by Darren Thrussell
FRENCH-born trainer Jean Pierre Carvalho and jockey Lukas Delozier teamed up for victory when MYTHICO landed the last Group race of the German season, the Group 3 Herzog von Ratibor Rennen at Krefeld.
Third in the Group 3 Preis der Winterfavoriten at Cologne last month, Mythico won at the fourth time of asking when landing the 55,000 Euro contest by ½ a length from Dolcetto, who despite being detached from the main field entering the back straight, ran on really well to take second, and being out of 2014 German Oaks runner-up Diamond Dove, could be one to follow next season at middle distance trips. Race favourite Virginia Storm, trained like Dolcetto by Cologne-based Henk Grewe, was 1½ lengths further back in third.
The victory for Mythico was yet another success for Adlerflug, who is without doubt the stallion of the moment in Germany this year. Winner of the German Derby in 2007, Adlerflug sired In Swoop and Torquator Tasso, the first two home in this year's German Derby, and after Sunday's victory, Mythico earned himself a quote of 16-1 with bookmakers Racebets for next year's renewal of the German classic.

KREFELD: NINE SET FOR GROUP 3 CONTEST
When Is The Next Major Horse Race Start
Written on 14/11/2020 by Darren Thrussell
The last Group race of the German season takes place on Sunday when nine two year olds line up for the Group 3 Herzog von Ratibor Rennen at Krefeld.
Trainer Henk Grewe has won the race for the last two years, with Donjah in 2018 and Wonderful Moon last year. This time around, the Cologne-based trainer runs DOLCETTO and VIRGINIA STORM, who have each won their only race to date. Although Dolcetto looked impressive when winning a Mülheim maiden race by five lengths last month, stable jockey Andrasch Starke takes the ride aboard Virginia Storm, who beat another of Sunday's runners, NOVELLINI, by ½ a length at Düsseldorf last month.
EASTSTORM won on her debut at Düsseldorf in August before returning to the course a month later, finishing fourth in a Listed race, where NANTE, who reappears on Sunday, was last of the seven runners, having also won on his debut.
Trainer Peter Schiergen has won this race three times in the past, and relies on TURANDOT here, the only filly in the race. Fifth in her first two runs, Turandot sprang a surprise at 17.7-1 when winning in impressive fashion at Hannover last month.
MYTHICO and SARDASHT are both maidens going into Sunday's race, but were third and fifth in the Group 3 Preis der Winterfavoriten at Cologne last month, with Sardasht going on to be third in the Group 2 Gran Criterium at Milan two weeks later.
The line up is completed by SPORTING, who will be a last ever Group runner for veteran trainer Hans-Jürgen Gröschel, who retires from training at the end of this year. Well beaten on his debut at Baden-Baden in September when only ninth (NOVELLINI in third), Sporting seemed to appreciate the more conventional right handed course and softer round at Cologne last time out, coming home 2¼ lengths clear of his nearest rival. The mount on Sunday of in-form Swiss lady rider Sybille Vogt, a victory for Sporting would be a fitting way for the 77 year old Gröschel to end his career at Group level.
The race is due off on Sunday at 15:45 CET / 2:45 pm UK time, and can be seen LIVE from Krefeld at this link:

Written on 09/11/2020 by Darren Thrussell
SUNNY QUEEN, one of three runners in the race for trainer Henk Grewe, was a surprise 23.7-1 winner of the final Group 1 race of the season in Germany, the Allianz Grosser Preis von Bayern at Munich on Sunday.
A winner at Listed level at Hannover before returning to the course last time out, being beaten in a photo finish to a Group 3 contest, Sunny Queen was a first ever Group 1 winner for jockey Rene Piechulek, who was riding the horse for only the second time after stable jockey and regular rider Andrasch Starke elected to ride Dicaprio, rated the highest of trainer Grewe's trio going into Sunday's race. 00020002
However, after early leader Tabera had come back to the field after setting a strong pace considering the soft conditions, several of the eleven runners still appeared to hold chances entering the closing stages. However, after British challenger Secret Advisor and then Dicaprio hit the front over by the far rails, Sunny Queen and race favourite Torquator Tasso charged down the outside of the pair, with Sunny Queen just prevailing by a neck from Torquator Tasso, with Dicaprio back in third.

Written on 07/11/20 by Darren Thrussell
FOUR high class British raiders are among the eleven runners set to line up in the final Group 1 race of the season in Germany, the Allianz Grosser Preis von Bayern at Munich on Sunday.
Best of the four on official ratings is the Charlie Appleby-trained SECRET ADVISOR, representing the powerful Godolphin operation led by Sheikh Mohammed. Asian lines betting. A dual winner at Meydan at the start of the year, Secret Advisor was last seen when second in a Listed race at Newmarket in June.
Although rain is not forecast, the ground at Munich can often be soft at this time of year, which could well suit MORANDO, whose last two victories have both been in Group 3 races on soft ground. The Andrew Balding-trained seven year old gelding, who will carry the famous blue and white colours of King Power Racing, was a very respectable fourth over 2 miles (around 3200 metres) in the Group 2 Long Distance Cup on Ascot Champions Day last month.
The British challenge is completed by the Ralph Beckett-trainer pair MANUELA DE VEGA and ANTONIA DE VEGA, second and fourth respectively in this race last year. Both rated 109 on official British ratings, both Manuela de Vega and Antonia de Vega have each won two races this season, and look closely matched here.
The home challenge is led by TORQUATOR TASSO and DICAPRIO, first and second in last month's Group 1 Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten, and two of the best current crop of middle distance three year olds in Germany. WALDERBE ran 15 times as a three year old in 2019, but never at Group level. However, trainer Ralf Rohne has done an excellent job with the Maxios colt this year, having won twice in his last three races, both Group 2 contests in Italy.
Besides Dicaprio, trainer Henk Grewe saddles TAX FOR MAX, still a maiden in five races, and SUNNY QUEEN, a winner is Listed level at Hannover before returning to the course last time out, being beaten in a photo finish to a Group 3 contest.
Like Sunny Queen, TABERA is a three year old filly, and she beat some big names last time out when winning the Group 3 Preis der Deutschen Einheit at Berlin-Hoppegarten, form which would give her a shout here. However, Tabera, trained in Cologne by Bulgarian-born Miltcho Mintchev has done all of her winning this year at 2000 metres, and the extra 400 metres on Sunday coupled with the expected soft ground could be an issue.
The line up is completed by INDIAN SOLDIER, a first ever Group 1 runner for Mannheim based trainer Marco Klein. Although taking a massive step up in class, his form figures at Munich read 31111, which include last time out when he won a Class 2 handicap by an incredible 19 lengths. Expected to go off at a huge price on Sunday, Indian Soldier, who will be ridden on Sunday by regular jockey Tommaso Scardino, could put up a better performance than many might be expecting.
Today's Grosser Preis von Bayern race is due off at 13:50 CET (12:50 pm UK time), and the entire raceday will be shown LIVE on YouTube at this link:

Written on 02/11/2020 by Darren Thrussell
The Peter Schiergen-trained QUIAN followed up his victory in September's German St. Leger when landing the Group 2 Comer Group Oleander Rennen at Berlin-Hoppegarten on Sunday.
Sent off the 2.8-1 favourite for the 100,000 Euro contest, Quian was never far away under jockey Bauyrzhan Murzabayev, and although taking a while to get going in the home straight, came home ¾ of a length ahead of Rip Van Lips, who had previously finished third to Quian in the aforementioned German St. Leger.
Having won the Oleander Rennen last year with Raa Atoll, race sponsor and Irish trainer Luke Comer saddled five of the eleven runners in this year's contest. However, Comer can count himself somewhat unlucky that he didn't get a second successive victory in the race as his five year old gelding Aircraft Carrier suffered major traffic problems in the home straight, and although arguably deserving more, could only manage third place under jockey Andrasch Starke.
Whilst winning jockey Murzabayev stated that the slow pace of the race didn't suit Quian, victorious trainer Schiergen has always held the horse in high regard. ‘As a two year old, we thought Quian would be a Derby horse, but he had a couple of problems which set him back. He's back to top form now though, and I was very happy with him today'.

BERLIN: SUCCESS FOR SUCCESSOR IN HOPPEGARTEN HURDLE
Written on 01/11/2020 by Darren Thrussell
The Christian von der Recke-trained SUCCESSOR, who started his career with top Irish flat trainer Aidan O'Brien, gained his first ever victory in Germany when prevailing in an eventful finish to the Erdbau & Containerdienst Brieskorn hurdle at the Hoppegarten course near Berlin on Sunday.
The first jump race to be held at Hoppegarten since 2004, the race saw thirteen runners line up over 3700 metres, with over half the field making their debut over jumps. With the ground on the heavy side of soft, the race turned into a true test of stamina, with Successor and Khan, a Group 1 winner on the flat in heavy ground at Cologne in 2018, building up a sizeable lead over their rivals.
After jumping the fourth last hurdle, Khan, showing his flat racing class sped clear of Successor, and looked set to give Robin Weber, one of Germany's top young flat jockeys, a victory in his first ever flat race. However, despite jumping the second last flight fine, Khan crumpled on landing, handing the lead to Czech challenger Silver Seam under jockey Jan Kratochvil approaching the last of the nine hurdles. However, just like Khan has done at the previous flight, Silver Seam, himself a decent flat performer having won last year's Austrian Derby, couldn't quite get his landing gear out after jumping the hurdle and slithered in the rain softened ground, handing victory to Successor under Czech lady rider Veronika Rezacova, herself a late replacement for the unavailable Jan Odlozil. Shoemaker, one of four runners in the race for trainer Pavel Vovcenko, came home in second with smart Flat performer Narello, who like Shoemaker was having his first run over jumps, third under top lady rider Sonja Daroszewski.
By Galileo out of a Danehill mare, and a full brother to hugely promising Irish novice hurdler N'Golo, Successor, a seven year old gelding, started off on the flat in Ireland with Aidan O'Brien before moving to his son Joseph O'Brien, for whom Successor landed a hurdle race at Wexford before returning to the same course two years later to win a handicap chase. After finishing sixth at Listowel in September last year, Successor made the switch to England, where, despite being winless in four races for trainer Jonjo O'Neill, he put up a fine performance in defeat when second under top weight at Sedgefield in March. Having joined von der Recke in the summer, Successor's only run for his new trainer going into Sunday saw victory on the flat in the Belgian St. Leger at Waregem in August.

Horse Racing Tips – Winning Horse Racing Handicapping Angles – Part 2
by Kenneth Strong of Predictem.com
The horse racing tips and handicapping angles below should be checked every time you handicap a race – and always before you make a bet.
Handicapping Angle #6 – Lasix - First and Second Time
First-time Lasix was once a powerful handicapping angle. It still works, just not as well as it used to. Lasix is a diuretic, and when given to a horse that is suffering from Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhaging (EIPH), it can improve the horse's performance. The key to Lasix is using it with additional angles, especially trainer patterns. If a trainer has a high win percentage with first-time Lasix horses, the horse deserves extra consideration. Not only may the horse be getting Lasix, it may also be receiving a number of additional 'legal' medications that help improve a trainer's win percentage with such types.
A better yet trickier angle on its own may be second-time Lasix. The theory is that if a horse has been suffering from EIPH, it will often be reluctant to perform to the best of its ability - even after being administered Lasix for the first time. But after a positive experience running on first-time Lasix – which may or may not be visible in the horse's actual performance, the horse can improve next time out. If you have binoculars, try to watch the first time Lasix horses when they return for unsaddling after a race. Look for any distress (or lack of it) and watch the body language of the jockey and trainer looking for positive gestures that might indicate the horse felt good or gave a good effort. An improved performance could be forthcoming in the horse's next start, and because you're one of the few handicappers with this 'inside' information, you'll get your price.
Handicapping Angle #7 - Layoff Specialists
Horses that show the ability to win off a layoff of four weeks or more will often continue to win off the shelf throughout their careers - especially when conditioned by a trainer who has won with layoff horses in the past. If the horse is coming into the race off a layoff, check the past performances for any signs of a good effort off a layoff. Layoffs of more than 30 says are indicated by an underline in the past performances. A previous good performance by a horse coming off a layoff is even more powerful when combined with a trainer who wins at a good win percentage with these types. Always check the trainer pattern percentages found underneath the past performances to see if the trainer has a good percentage with layoff types. Horses are creatures of habit, as are trainers. If they have won off a layoff before – they can do it again.
Handicapping Angle #8 – Surface Switches - Turf to Dirt and Dirt to Turf
Sharp trainers have known for years that running a horse on the turf is a great way to keep a horse with physical problems fit and sound while pointing towards a dirt race. Very few horses are equally effective on both turf and dirt. Sometimes you will see a proven dirt horse that has never been competitive on the turf – in a turf race. Why? So the horse can stay fit and remain sound while waiting for the perfect spot on the dirt. Turf is physically kinder to most horses with problems. You don't see the same win percentages or trainer manipulations using the dirt-to-turf angle. That angle is generally reserved for flops on the dirt that have no where else to try for a win or for dirt flops with turf pedigrees. Dirt to turf is often more of a desperation move than anything – not so with the turf-to-dirt angle. While some trainers have no clue with regards to soundness element of the turf-to-dirt angle, others know exactly what they are doing. This is indicated in the trainer percentages which are found underneath the past performances. Always check the turf-to-dirt trainer statistics before you bet a race with such types.
When Is The Next Major Horse Race Betting
Handicapping Angle #9 – Blinkers On or Off
The blinkers on or off angles are generally overrated, but in some situations, especially with young horses, they can be dynamite at exceptional odds. A young horse that has been looking around in its races, getting left in the gate by not paying attention, that is fearful of its competition, or that has simply failed to concentrate on the job at hand, can often run with improved focus when blinkers are added for the first time. Often they will show improved speed and carry that speed further. Conversely, a horse that has been uncompetitive while racing with blinkers on can occasionally improve dramatically when the blinkers are removed.
In the blinkers off case, the horse might be fearful of not being able to see its surroundings and/or competition in a race. Sometimes horses with blinkers on fail to respond in the stretch simply because they can't see their rivals – and once blinkers are removed the horse turns into a real battler down the stretch. Whether blinkers on or off works depends quite a bit on the horse's personality. Some horses need blinkers and some don't. It's up to the trainer to know which horses need what and some trainers know their horses better than others.
While the blinkers on and off angles are sometimes desperation moves, the trainer percentages at the bottom of the past performances will tell you for sure. A trainer who knows his horses can have great results with blinker changes, especially if the horse has shown some talent in morning workouts, in previous races, or has been well bet in previous starts. Additionally, the blinkers on-off-on and blinkers off-on-off can sometimes wake an older campaigner out of the doldrums at big odds.
Handicapping Angle #10 – Trouble Lines
Most horses cannot overcome trouble in a race and still win. Exceptional horses can, but, well, they're the exception. In saying that, most trouble in horse races is overrated as a handicapping factor. Horses can get into trouble at the start, they can get left in the gate, they can get bumped, they can lack room, they get stopped on the turns and stretch, steadied in traffic etc.
The real key to determining how serious the trouble was is to note what the horse was doing when they got into trouble. If a proven speed horse that needs the lead gets left in the gate they might have a legitimate excuse for losing. A come-from-the-clouds rallying type would likely not have won anyways (speed always wins a higher percentage of races that it should.) A horse that gets stopped and checked behind horses while making a move into the stretch is always a better bet in its next race than a horse that was checked in the stretch after already starting to fade.
When Is The Next Major Horse Race
The latter scenario is why you need to read the result charts or watch the races and replays and make notes. The trip notes at the end of the past performances are limited to a certain number characters, and they often tell only part of the story. If a horse has a comment such as 'checked stretch' in its passed performances, you need to know whether the horse was moving forward or going backwards when the trouble occurred. Did the horse have a chance to win or was it done? A horse moving forward when trouble occurred would have to be given extra consideration in its next start. A horse that was already going backwards when the trouble occurred would be downgraded in comparison.
The best kind of trouble from a bettor's point of view is that which occurs when a horse lacks room on the turn or stretch, but not enough to force it to steady or check. The horse might be full of run behind horses with nowhere to go, but a smooth jockey can make this type of trouble almost unnoticeable to the untrained eye. This kind of trouble is easy enough to spot after you have watched enough races, but it eludes most bettors - which of course results in good odds the next time the horse is entered.
